Self-publishing a book means releasing it without a traditional publisher: you keep the rights, you decide the content and the retailer pays royalties to you. The route has nine stages — concept, manuscript, editing, cover design, formatting, ISBN, metadata, publication and launch — and can be completed in a few months. This guide covers each stage, what costs money and what does not, and which decisions are hard to reverse. Crea Editores works with authors in the United States and Mexico, in English and Spanish.
What self-publishing actually means
Self-publishing means you are the publisher of record for your own book: you decide the content, hire the services you need, keep the rights and receive royalties directly from the retailer. No acquisitions committee decides whether your manuscript is worth printing.
It does not mean doing everything alone. Most authors hire copyediting, cover design and formatting, exactly as a publishing house would. The difference is who makes the decisions and who owns the result.
Self-publishing vs traditional publishing
| Criterion | Self-publishing | Traditional publishing |
|---|---|---|
| Who decides it gets published | The author | The acquisitions committee |
| Rights | Retained by the author | Licensed by contract, in whole or in part |
| Up-front investment | Paid by the author | Paid by the publisher |
| Royalties | Paid by the retailer to the author | Contract percentage |
| Time to publication | Weeks to months | Frequently more than a year |
| Cover and title control | Author's | Publisher's |
| Physical bookstore placement | Limited; requires expanded distribution | Their strongest asset |
The nine stages of the process
Concept and reader
Before the first line: who the book is for, what problem it solves and which titles it will sit next to in its category.
A finished manuscript
A complete draft with a settled chapter structure. Editing a half-written book multiplies both work and cost.
Copyediting and proofreading
Developmental and line work first; proofreading last, on the typeset file. How copyediting works.
Front cover, spine and back cover
Your cover is your first sales argument and it gets judged at thumbnail size. See the cover design process.
Print-ready formatting
Typography, margins, running heads, bleed and page breaks — a PDF that meets print-on-demand specifications.
ISBN and copyright registration
Separate, optional steps depending on your distribution plan. In the U.S. ISBNs are issued by Bowker; in Mexico, by INDAUTOR.
Title, categories and keywords
What decides whether your book shows up when a reader searches your topic. Set before launch, adjustable after.
Upload and proofs
File upload, previewer review, printed proof copy and approval. Amazon KDP publishing assistance.
Release and adjustments
Author page, description, per-market pricing and a close look at the first weeks of sales.
What it costs
Publishing on Amazon KDP has no listing fee: the platform does not charge to upload a book. Real spending sits in the professional services you choose and the official registrations you decide to file. Full breakdown in how much it costs to publish a book.
ISBN, copyright and registration
- ISBN identifies one specific edition commercially. In the United States ISBNs are sold by Bowker; in Mexico they are issued by INDAUTOR under an official fee schedule.
- Copyright exists from the moment the work is created, not from a filing.
- Registration is a separate filing — with the U.S. Copyright Office or INDAUTOR — that produces documentary evidence of authorship.
Fees and requirements change. Check the official source for your country before budgeting.
Where to publish: Amazon KDP and IngramSpark
Amazon KDP
- Direct publishing to Kindle, paperback and hardcover.
- Print on demand: no inventory, no print run.
- Sales across Amazon marketplaces with per-region pricing.
- Free to list, fully controlled from the author's account.
IngramSpark
- Expanded distribution to bookstores and libraries.
- A catalogue booksellers actually order from.
- Requires an ISBN and trade discounts; U.S. customers may use a free IngramSpark ISBN, though your own gives greater imprint control and portability.
- Stricter file specifications and more admin.
Formats: paperback, hardcover and eBook
| Format | What it is for | What it requires |
|---|---|---|
| eBook (Kindle) | Immediate international reach at a low price point | Reflowable file; flat cover image |
| Paperback | Core selling format, events and signings | Interior PDF with bleed; wraparound cover with calculated spine |
| Hardcover | Gift editions, illustrated books, prestige | Different spine calculation and wrap allowance; higher print cost |
Royalties and print on demand
With print on demand the retailer prints each copy when a reader buys it and deducts the printing cost from your royalty. Page count, colour and trim size therefore change what you earn per copy.
Royalty rates, printing costs and minimum list prices are set by Amazon and change over time. Before you set your price, check current figures in the official Amazon KDP help pages and run your margin through their calculator.
A realistic timeline
| Stage | Typical duration |
|---|---|
| Copyediting | 2 to 6 weeks depending on length |
| Cover design | 1 to 3 weeks with revision rounds |
| Interior formatting | 1 to 3 weeks |
| ISBN purchase or filing | Varies; run it in parallel |
| Upload, printed proof and approval | 1 to 2 weeks |
These are working estimates, not delivery promises. The biggest cause of delay is never the platform: it is revision rounds on a manuscript that was not finished.
Mistakes that delay a launch
- Formatting the interior before editing is finished — every text change reflows the pages.
- Designing the cover before the final page count is known: the spine depends on it.
- Treating categories and keywords as paperwork instead of strategy.
- Approving without ordering a printed proof.
- Setting a list price without calculating print cost per copy.
- Launching without an author page or a worked-through book description.
How to choose publishing services
Ask for three things before you hire anyone: a real work sample, the scope in writing including the number of revision rounds, and clarity about who owns the rights and the publishing account. If a provider requires your rights or publishes under its own account without explaining what that means, it is not self-publishing.
Crea Editores provides publishing assistance for authors releasing books on Amazon KDP as independent authors. The service may include copyediting, cover design, book formatting, file preparation and publishing assistance. The author keeps control of the work, the rights and the royalties.
Evidence: two published projects
El Códice del Líder Digital by Edmund Mejía arrived as a finished manuscript from an author with no self-publishing experience. Work delivered: editing, cover design, formatting, ISBN handling and publication. Verifiable result: published and available on Amazon. Read the full case study.
Quantum Physics for Kids by Ángel Humberto Montiel Razo is an illustrated children's book produced end to end by Crea Editores and published in six languages — Spanish, English, German, French, Italian and Czech — with print on demand and international distribution on Amazon. Presented at FIL Palacio de Minería 2026 and FIL San Miguel de Allende 2026.
Frequently asked questions
Is Crea Editores a traditional publisher?
No. We provide publishing assistance to authors who publish as independents. There is no acquisitions committee and no rights assignment: the author keeps ownership of the work.
Who keeps the rights and the royalties?
The author. Rights stay with you and royalties are paid by the retailer directly into your account.
Can I use my own Amazon KDP account?
Yes, and we recommend it. We work inside your account so control, sales reporting and payments always stay with you.
Do I need an ISBN?
Not to publish on Amazon KDP. Your own ISBN matters if you want distribution beyond Amazon or want to appear as the publisher of record. ISBNs are sold by Bowker in the U.S. and issued by INDAUTOR in Mexico.
Do you work with authors in the United States?
Yes. We offer bilingual self-publishing services for independent authors in the U.S. and Mexico, in English and Spanish.
How long does it take to publish a book?
It depends on the state of the manuscript and the services involved. With a finished manuscript, editorial and design work is usually measured in weeks; we provide a written schedule after reviewing your material.
How much does it cost?
It depends on length, formats, illustration and which services you need. We do not publish flat rates; we send a written proposal after reviewing your material.
Tell us where your book stands and get a proposal
We review your manuscript or your idea and tell you what it needs before publication, with scope and schedule in writing.
